This time we’ll get it right
Uncertainty might breed contempt when it comes to listening to disagreement
Do you believe that the England men’s football team should have a foreign manager? Do you support assisted dying? My answers are no and yes. The first I can answer easily and the second requires much more thought.
The more confident I am in my answer, the harder I find it to understand those who disagree with me. But at the same time, I have spent more time in the last week or so reading about the first than the second issue.
Perhaps this is because I love reading about football, or perhaps because it’s a story that will be in and out of the news more quickly. But perhaps it’s precisely because I am more certain in my views that I’m willing to listen to different perspectives more.
